Characterization of neural tube defects in pregnant women from Las Tunas, a four-year study

Background: neural tube defects are caused by failure of closure of this anatomical structure during embryogenesis; its incidence has been increasing in the province, that’s why this work was done.
Objective: to characterize some variables related to neural tube defects in pregnant patients from Las Tunas during the years 2012 to 2015.
Methods: a descriptive and retrospective study was carried out using data from the Cuban Registry of Congenital Malformations in the period 2012 to 2015 in Las Tunas. The sample comprised the 33 pregnancies with neural tube defects during this period, regardless they were discontinued or not.
Results: neural tube defects were detected in 1, 31 per each 1000 pregnancies detected from 2012 to 2015 and accounted for 7,91 % of all birth defects; the predominant clinical variant was anencephaly; the most affected maternal age group was from 20 to 34 years; the first trimester of pregnancy was the period in which the largest number of defects (18 cases) were diagnosed; Las Tunas was the municipality with the highest incidence; 93,9 % of pregnancies were discontinued with medical criteria and family approval.
Conclusions: there has been an increase in the incidence of neural tube defects, being anencephaly the predominant one; most of those birth defects are interrupted by medical criteria and family approval.Downloads
