Effectiveness of Magnetotherapy in the treatment of the temporomandibular joint pain dysfunction syndrome

Background: temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome is the most common cause of facial pain after dental pain.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of magnetotherapy in the treatment of painful conditions of the temporomandibular joint in patients treated at "Ormani Sandblasting" Teaching Dental Clinic in Pinar del Rio during 2014.
Method: an intervention study was carried out in patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome treated at the dental clinic and time period mentioned above. The sample was composed of 80 patients, divided into two groups of 40 patients each. Group 1 (experimental) was applied low intensity magnets with anti-inflammatory analgesic parameters and group II (control) was treated conventionally.
Results: in the sample females prevailed, as well as patients from 31 to 41 years old, with 45 %. 60 % of the patients from group I was cured in one to five days and 95 % in six to ten days. In group 2 only 15 % was cured in 1 to 5 days, reaching 70 % in six to ten days.
Conclusions: magnetotherapy was effective in the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome. The patients progressed satisfactorily, with remission of all symptoms in a shorter time. There were no adverse effects.
