Labial dysfunction in children from six to nine years old

Background: it is estimated that more than 50% of children have labial dysfunction.
Objective: to characterize labial dysfunction in children who are from six to nine years old and study in “Camilo Cienfuegos” semi-boarding school in Puerto Padre municipality, during 2015.
Methods: a descriptive and transversal study was carried out in the child population from the health area and time period stated before. The study sample was made up of 60 schoolchildren who were examined in the established period and cooperated with the investigation, previous consent of their parents or guardians.
Results: 60 % of the examinees showed labial dysfunction, most of them were in the group from six to seven years old. 77,7 % of the children with labial dysfunction had malocclusions and 80,5 % showed deforming buccal habits. The children with that kind of habit showed 5.09 times more possibilities to develop labial dysfunction.
Conclusions: the prevalence of labial dysfunction in the children object of study was characterized, prevailing in those who had some kind of deforming buccal habit.
