Some clinical-epidemiological variables in children with hyperthyroidism

Background: hyperthyroidism in childhood is infrequent. However, it has a great impact on the well-being of children and adolescents.
Objective: to describe the results of a clinical study conducted with children suffering from hyperthyroidism and attended to at "Pepe Portilla" Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Pinar del Río, from January 1997 to December 2015.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out with children diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, attended to at the institution and during the period herein mentioned. The study population consisted of 102 pediatric patients. The data were taken from the medical records and processed according to descriptive statistics.
Results: the female sex predominated with 75,5 %, as well as the 10 to 14 age group (42,2 %). The most frequent symptoms were asthenia and palpitations (68.6%), whereas goiter and tachycardia were the predominant signs (73,5 %). The most frequently used treatment modality included antithyroid drugs (87,8 %), with treatment effectiveness in 44,1 % of the patients.
Conclusions: the results of the clinical study carried out during 19 years in the children with hyperthyroidism were described.Downloads
