Background: the repetition of a laparotomy can be scheduled or to demand, this last one can be decided according to the post-operative progress of the patient, the clinical judgment of the surgeon and the supporting medical team.
Objective: to characterize the surgical re-interventions in the patients assisted in "Aleida Fernández Chardiet" Educational General Hospital from January, 2011 to December, 2013.
Method: a descriptive and retrospective study was carried out in patients who underwent surgical re-interventions and had complete health histories in the hospital and time period mentioned above. The sample was made up of 14 patients older than 18 years.
Results: the most affected organ system was the gastrointestinal one, in connection with the presence of peritonitis. As diagnostic criteria, the clinical-imaging and the re-intervention to demand prevailed. The deceased prevailed when the affected organ system was at first the gastrointestinal one, diagnosed with intestinal occlusion and perforation of hollow viscera. Spontaneous pneumothorax and a time of 72 hours or more between the first operation and the first re-intervention prevailed, without deceased. The prevailing time between the first operation and the first re-intervention was 72 hours and more, all the patients alive.
Conclusions: the surgical re-interventions in those patients object of study were characterized. Mortality was low, and there was none in those patients with a longer time passed between the operation and the re-intervention.
