Clinicoepidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 positive patients belonging to the "Joaquín de Agüero y Agüero " Polyclinic, Camagüey

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is a current cause of significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The disease has reached the province of Camagüey, with 49 positive cases.

Objective: to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 positive patients belonging to the health district of the "Joaquín de Agüero y Agüero" University Polyclinic of the province of Camagüey.

Methods: a descriptive observational cross-sectional study was carried out during the period from March to May 2020, with the 13 patients diagnosed as positive to RT-PCR for the detection of COVID-19, belonging to the aforementioned health district. The database of the polyclinic management post was used, filled in with the data collected through epidemiological surveys prepared by doctors in the emergency department.

Results: extreme age-groups predominated, over 60 years with five cases (38,4 %), followed by those under 20 years with four (30,8 %). There was a predominance of the female sex (69,2 %). The epidemiological history most commonly found was being a contact with a positive case (76,9 %), with a higher incidence in those over 60 years (50 %). The most common clinical manifestations were fever and cough. Four patients (30,7 %) remained asymptomatic. There was a higher incidence of comorbidity with high blood pressure; however, more than half of them remained asymptomatic. Cough, shortness of breath, fever and rhinorrhea characterized the asthmatics of the study.

Conclusions: the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of these patients with COVID-19 were described.
