Children’s visual conversion caused by psychosocial disorder

The loss of non-organic vision affects about 5 % of patients, and occurs in two forms: visual conversion disorder and simulation. The latter does not occur frequently in the pediatric age and if so, it is not intentional but due to possible psychosocial and psychiatric disorders. This study presents the case of a 9-year-old girl who was taken to the ophthalmology department of the Provincial Pediatric Hospital, complaining of blurred vision and pain in both eyes, accompanied by headache. Structural and functional tests were performed which did not show alterations to prove the condition. Through specific explorations of the visual function, simulation of children’s blindness caused by family psychosocial disorders was suspected. This diagnosis was made after a thorough family history taking. The girl recovered her vision.
